How to Spot a Fake: Authenticating Luxury Fashion

Luxury fashion authentication
Knowing how to authenticate luxury pieces protects your investment and ensures you get what you pay for.

The luxury pre-owned market has never been more vibrant, offering fashion lovers the opportunity to acquire dream pieces at significantly reduced prices. But with the explosion of this market has come a parallel explosion in sophisticated counterfeiting. Knowing how to authenticate luxury fashion is no longer a specialist skill — it’s essential knowledge for any savvy buyer.

The first and most important rule of authentication is to know your brand deeply before you buy. Study the original — its hardware, stitching patterns, leather grain, logos, date codes, and hardware weight. Authentic luxury brands are obsessively consistent. Any deviation from the established standard is a red flag worth investigating.

Hardware is one of the easiest areas to evaluate. Genuine luxury hardware — from Louis Vuitton’s brass to Chanel’s gold-tone or silver-tone — has significant weight and a rich, consistent finish. Counterfeit hardware is often lightweight, may show uneven plating, or tarnishes quickly. Zippers from brands like Lampo or RiRi are used by genuine luxury houses and have a specific, smooth action that is very difficult to replicate cheaply.

Stitching quality is another key indicator. Luxury goods are stitched with precise, even tension, consistent stitch counts per inch, and high-quality thread that doesn’t fray or pull. Examine stitching at stress points — handles, corners, and zipper pulls — as these areas reveal quality most clearly. Crooked or uneven stitching is almost always a sign of a counterfeit.

Interior details are frequently overlooked by counterfeiters. Date codes, serial numbers, and brand stamps vary by house and era. Research these details carefully for the specific item you’re evaluating. Many brands also use proprietary fabrics and hardware on interiors that are very difficult to replicate accurately.

When in doubt, use professional authentication services. Companies like Entrupy, Real Authentication, and Vestiaire Collective’s in-house team use a combination of expert human knowledge and AI technology to authenticate items with high accuracy. The small cost of authentication is always worth the peace of mind, especially on high-value purchases.
